A few people have been telling me about this fantastic series-Luther. I held off for some time even though all I heard were good things. Sometimes I’m slow that way. I watched the first episode and found myself finishing all three seasons over the course of a few days.
Here is an excerpt of the description: Meet Detective Chief Inspector John Luther. He’s a homicide detective with an extraordinary case-clearance rate. He’s obsessive, instinctive, and intense. Nobody who ever stood at his side has a bad word to say about him. And yet there are rumors that Luther is bad—not corrupt, but tormented. After years of chasing the most depraved criminals in London’s gritty underworld, he seethes with a hidden fury he can barely control, making him do things any other detective wouldn’t and shouldn’t do.
This series is incredible. I will not spoil any of it, really I wont, but let me describe a bit of what makes this show so excellent.
First you have the character of Luther-A flawed “copper” portrayed by Idris Elba. Aside from the fact that I think Idris should be the next James Bond, he is a phenomenal actor. He takes this character and makes you care. You follow Luther through his cases and choices. Some good some bad. All along you root for him even when you see the approaching train wreck heading for his life.
Next, the writing. The character and series were created by the talented, Neil Cross. He writes in a crisp and vibrant manner. Each episode in this series is a showcase of taut and incredible pacing. Some of the twists will make your head spin. You will find yourself riveted by the story line. If I ever write a detective story, I want it to be in the caliber of Mr. Cross.
Finally, the supporting cast is top notch and gives Elba an excellent group to work with. Without spoiling anything I only have two words for you regarding the cast: Alice Morgan.
There are three seasons, each four episodes long. Each episode runs about 52 minutes, which you will find entirely too short. You will regret that there are only three seasons. Go and watch Luther. you can thank me later. On a side note this is a BBC show so you may have to adjust to the English accent. I found it only took me a few minutes.
